The Mayor's Office of Sustainability and Resilience (MOSR) in Atlanta is hosting an assortment of events throughout April to mark Earth Month, with a long-term goal of addressing significant climate challenges such as extreme heat, drought, and flooding. Announced on Tuesday, the MOSR initiative kicks off with the city joining the global "Race to Resilience" campaign, an effort backed by the United Nations to foster climate resilience globally. According to an announcement on City of Atlanta's government website, Atlanta's dedication to this cause focuses on increasing tree canopy coverage, broadening access to solar energy, tackling food waste, and employing climate-resilient solutions.

As part of the Earth Month agenda, a noteworthy event taking place on April 22 will be the Earth Day and Youth Climate Action Fund Global Announcement. On the 55th Anniversary of Earth Day, the MOSR, in collaboration with partners such as EarthDay.org, Bloomberg Philanthropies, and 21st Century Leaders, will unveil the beneficiaries of the second round of the Youth Climate Action Fund. As per the official statement, the fund is set to distribute $85,000 in grants to youth-led initiatives, a significant increase from the $40,000 distributed last year to 10 project teams.

In another initiative slated for April 24, the "Sustainability in Action Day" at City Hall, Atlanta's focus will turn to local food systems and urban agriculture. The event is poised to put a spotlight on ventures such as AgLanta that enable leasing of vacant city land to local growers. Community partners are expected to participate in this zero-waste activity, providing educational workshops and showcasing locally-sourced food, aligning with the city's commitment to foster a thriving local ecosystem.

Rounding out the month, April 30 marks the Climate Resilient ATL Plan Kickoff, signifying the commencement of a community-wide commitment to combat climate change across Atlanta. As mentioned in the official announcement, the MOSR will jump-start a series of community festivals and engagements designed to further enhance the city's action plan. This plan, developed over 18 months with community input and research, will serve as a comprehensive blueprint for the city's strategy in preparing and adapting to climate-related adversities and their disproportional impacts.

The MOSR's April schedule manifests Atlanta's assertive stance on sustainability, resilience, and climate action. To keep abreast of all the events and for more detailed information, the public can visit the MOSR website or follow the office on social media at @ATLResilience.
