The Sierra Vista Unified School District is in hot water as a report by the Arizona Auditor General's office has revealed a series of financial missteps and operational oversights. It turns out that the district has been erroneously throwing money at administrators, to the tune of $34,500 in bonuses and performance pay that should likely have been directed elsewhere. According to the audit report on Friday, these weren't the only financial faux pas committed by the district.
The same report goes on to detail that Sierra Vista Unified didn't stop at just overpaying its administrators. It also misstepped in the way it compensated some of its other employees and carried out retirement withholdings; all financial processes that one would hope a school district could properly manage. Furthermore, the audit found that there were serious shortcomings when it came to safeguarding district assets – specifically, cash and fuel supplies were left vulnerable to potential mismanagement or misuse.
The district also flouted conflict-of-interest laws and was lax in restricting access to its IT systems. These lapses could have easily opened the door to breaches or unauthorized meddling. As if to add insult to injury, the district was also reproached for not ensuring all transportation requirements were met, which is critical to ensure student safety.
