A tragic incident occurred in a Baytown apartment complex that left a six-month-old baby girl dead after a pit bull attack. The Baytown Police and EMS were called to the scene Tuesday afternoon, as reported by CBS Austin. The involved dog, a one-year-old pit bull mix, was new to the family's home located on East James Avenue near Highway 99.
Also noted in the incident, another dog, also characterized as a pit bull mix, was securely placed in a kennel at the time of the attack, captured by Air-11 as animal control removed both animals from the residence. The infant, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Lindsay Kahl, the director of training at Revival Dog Training, highlighted, in an interview with News 4 San Antonio, the complexities of introducing a new dog into a home with children, stating, "It very much depends on the age of the child but trying to keep interactions minimal and calm at first."
According to the insights from Kahl, establishing a calm environment and creating safe spaces for pets is crucial, as are using baby gates, crates, and leashes to maintain boundaries and separation when supervision isn't possible. Emphasizing the paramount importance of vigilant supervision, she advises those bringing a new baby home to allow time for the household canine to adjust to the baby's routines, including familiarization with the sounds and equipment associated with infants before their arrival.
Kahl further elaborated on the nuances of canine communication, contrasting it with human reliance on words. "Dogs communicate differently than people. They use body language. People rely on words... sometimes there can be misunderstandings and miscommunications that can happen very easily," she told CBS Austin. In the aftermath of the incident, local authorities have taken custody of the two dogs, with the one responsible for the attack slated for euthanasia, while decisions regarding the other remain with its owner.
No arrests have been made nor charges filed as of the latest updates, but the police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal event, as documented by the Baytown officials involved.
