The Boerne community and its Police Department are mourning the loss of K-9 Chico, who was struck by a vehicle and killed while on duty. According to a report by My Boerne News, the incident occurred yesterday morning.
Boerne Police Chief Steve Perez acknowledged the department's loss following the incident, "We are heartbroken by this loss. K-9 Chico was a valued member of the department since November 2023," according to My Boerne News. He described Chico as a loyal and courageous partner who served with honor, pride, and dedication. The accident occurred shortly after Chico had assisted officers during a routine traffic stop, and an equipment malfunction caused him to exit the patrol vehicle.
After Chico alerted to narcotics in a suspect vehicle, he was placed back in the patrol car while officers conducted a search. When preparing to leave the scene, a malfunction in the door locking mechanism allowed Chico to exit. Officers searched for him and found the K-9 in the median of the interstate, where he had been struck by a car.
Perez highlighted that K-9 Chico was not only involved in enforcement but also contributed to community engagement through demonstrations and events. A table has been set up in the lobby of the Boerne Police Department for community members to leave messages in his memory. Perez encouraged those who wish to support to contribute to the Boerne Police Foundation "in memory of K-9 Chico," as reported by My Boerne News.
