Yesterday in Mattapan, an area known for its battles with narcotics and gun violence, a routine drug investigation escalated into a significant arrest. According to Boston Police Department's report, officers from the District B-3 Drug Control Unit observed and subsequently apprehended 58-year-old Andre Wright of Jamaica Plain on charges related to firearms, narcotics, and motor vehicle violations.
Officers noticed a suspiciously parked car in the vicinity of 39 Baird Street. The car, maneuvered by Wright, initially blocked a crosswalk before being repositioned. It was discovered through a vehicle registration check that the license plates were not only improperly attached but also registered to another vehicle. After witnessing Wright enter a nearby apartment and then drive away minutes later, a traffic stop was executed at the intersection of Morton Street and Arborway.
Upon stopping Wright, the authorities confirmed that he did not have a valid driver's license. Their search led to the discovery of a substance believed to be crack cocaine in the center console of the vehicle. The search intensified, unearthing further contraband including a loaded black Sig Sauer firearm with ammunition, a digital scale, plastic bag with baking soda, and a considerable sum of U.S. Currency, all as detailed by the official report.
Wright was taken into custody without incident and has been charged with possession of a Class B substance with intent to distribute, receiving stolen property (firearm), unlawful possession of a firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. With the arraignment scheduled to take place in Dorchester District Court, these developments underscore a reality experienced by many urban neighborhoods.
