The Colorado Department of Transportation is setting its sights on the aging I-76 for a bit of much-needed TLC. Starting April 28, a bridge repair project east of Wiggins, Colorado, will result in lane availability, where travelers will encounter single lane closures on I-76 over Bijou Creek at Mile Point 67.11. The Colorado Department of Transportation has flagged this area as a zone where drivers should not only expect delays but also prepare for a 24/7 reduction in lanes that will persist for the next several months, according to CDOT.
This roadwork marathon doesn't end at Bijou Creek; come this summer, it's a repeat performance east of Roggen over Lost Creek. The effort is more than just a band-aid; these concrete bridges, pushing past their 65-year milestone, are undergoing concrete repair, asphalt surface replacement, guardrail upgrades, and new railing installations over Lost Creek. Despite the inconvenience, the goal seems clear: to crank up safety, ripple out a smoother drive, and stretch the life span of these highways. Minor delays near work zones are anticipated, bringing along a reduced speed limit to 55 MPH, and, if needed, a cap on vehicle widths at a neat 10 feet.
With RDZ Build donning the title of prime contractor for this infrastructure facelift totaling $3.26 million, the benefits could very well justify the temporary grind for daily commuters and road trippers alike. The project's expected bow is set for fall 2025. Workdays will span Monday through Friday with daylight hours as their canvas, occasionally dipping into extended hours and seizing some weekends. However, CDOT has issued a gentle reminder that all this is subject to the whims of weather.
