Broken Arrow is calling on all its citizens to unite for a cause that honors the valiant hearts who served the nation with unwavering courage. Representative Ross Ford announced that the third annual Oklahoma Memorial Trail Ruck-Off is set to take place on May 10. This year’s event commemorates the service of U.S. Army Infantry Major Clarence Oliver, a Korean War combat veteran and Broken Arrow resident. Participants in the ruck-off will complete a military-style march while carrying a weighted backpack to raise awareness about veterans’ issues and support military recruitment efforts.
The Oklahoma House relayed Ford's invitation to Oklahomans, encouraging them to either partake in the march or support by attending. "Our veterans have done so much to preserver our freedoms and keep our citizens safe. It will be an honor to recognize their efforts in this way," Ford said. Veterans Park at 1111 S Main St. will be the starting point for the march at 7 a.m., where individuals can choose from a four-mile or longer twelve-mile route, with an option to carry a 35-pound ruck.
In addition to the physical tribulations and camaraderie of the march itself, attendees can also revel in some community and comfort food. The Broken Arrow VFW Post 10887 located on 1117 S Main St. is hosting a come-and-go pancake breakfast from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. It's a chance for participants and supporters to carb-load before the event or replenish after some hard-earned miles.
The day's activities culminate in a closing ceremony scheduled for noon, taking place behind the Veterans Center at 1117 S Main St. Ford extends his gratitude towards the City of Broken Arrow, the Veterans & Public Safety Caucus, the Oklahoma Department of Veterans Affairs and Soldiers Wish for their collaboration in making this commemorative event possible. Whether marching for awareness or clapping from the sidelines, the Annual Ruck-Off serves as an opportunity for the community to rally together in recognition of those who've worn the uniform.
