A Brooklyn man faces serious charges after a fatal car crash that took the life of his passenger. Tyree Epps, 32, of Brooklyn, was arraigned on indictment charges for the crash that occurred on February 27, resulting in the death of Imani Vance, 26. According to the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, Epps allegedly sped through a stop sign and collided with a school bus, leading to Vance's death and injuring the school bus driver.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez stated, “The tragic loss of Imani Vance was allegedly caused by the defendant’s reckless decision to ignore a stop sign and drive at excessive speeds. His actions showed a shocking disregard for human life and safety, made worse by his attempt to flee the scene instead of helping the victim. We are committed to holding him fully accountable and will continue to prioritize the safety of every Brooklyn resident.” As reported by the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office, Epps was ordered held without bail and is scheduled to return to court on June 20.
The collision occurred as Epps was driving south on Van Sinderen Avenue and ran a stop sign at the intersection with Blake Avenue. The impact of the crash caused Vance to be thrown into the windshield where she sustained fatal injuries. The bus driver suffered minor injuries. Epps allegedly fled the scene in an Uber, leading to a chase by NYPD before his apprehension.
Vance was taken to Brookdale Hospital where she was pronounced dead from blunt impact injuries that included a laceration to the heart. The indictment charges against Epps include second-degree manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, second-degree assault, leaving the scene of an incident without reporting, disobeying stop signs, driving in excess of maximum speed limits, and as an unlicensed driver. This case is being prosecuted by the Street Safety Bureau of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office.
