A Broward Sheriff's Office detention deputy has been taken into custody on serious charges of domestic violence, including aggravated battery and domestic battery. As reported by CBS12, Deputy David Powell, age 30, was arrested on Monday after an alleged domestic disturbance turned violent.
The incident reportedly began with a call to the Broward County Regional Communications at approximately 7:20 a.m. on Monday, alerting authorities to the domestic disturbance. Powell, at the scene, claimed the encounter was verbal, however, the victim gave a differing account, indicating that Powell had committed multiple acts of physical violence against her. According to the Special Victims Unit detectives, the investigation revealed Powell's violent actions to include slapping the victim hard enough to lead to hearing loss, and repeatedly striking her with a belt. Such injuries required hospitalization due to their severity, and Powell was arrested and has been placed on administrative leave without pay.
As Powell confronts the consequences of his actions, including three counts of aggravated battery, one count of felony battery, and four counts of domestic battery, Broward Sheriff’s Office urges those experiencing domestic violence to reach out for help and call 911, as expressed in a statement obtained by WSVN. Their investigation also unearthed further allegations of abuse dating back as far as March 2024, leading to the additional charges.
Following the arrest, authorities have executed a risk protection order against Powell, confiscating several firearms in the process. "Domestic violence is never acceptable. This is a serious issue that devastates the safety and wellbeing of individuals and families. Whenever anyone in this community, including employees of this agency, break the law, they will be held accountable for their actions," declared Broward Sheriff Dr. Gregory Tony in his statement obtained by CBS12. Powell, who joined the Broward Sheriff's Office on December 6, 2021, now awaits further proceedings at the Broward County Main Jail.
