A Caledonia family has been left to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss of Jeff Smith, a 42-year-old man and one of 11 siblings after a barn fire claimed his life in the early hours of Sunday. As reported by WISN 12 News, the disaster struck near Nicholson and 7 Mile Roads in Caledonia, and police found Smith's body while overhauling hot spots of the fire.
The Caledonia Police Department, South Shore Fire Department, and Caledonia Fire Department were dispatched and arrived at the scene within four minutes of the call, which was logged just before 3 a.m. They were confronted by a barn fully engulfed in flames, as stated in a news release cited by the Journal Sentinel.
Meanwhile, the family has organized a GoFundMe campaign to support Smith's funeral and memorial expenses and to repair the fire-damaged property, which was the home of Smith's father. The fundraising effort was mentioned in the WISN 12 News article, noting that the family sought communal support in these trying times.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Caledonia Police Department. While the property loss is measurable, the family of Smith, described as "the protector" in a TMJ4 report, is struggling to comprehend the depth of their loss following his untimely death. Funeral services for Smith have not yet been announced.
