The letter explained that the students and graduates also had their records terminated in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
Pittsburgh-based immigration lawyer Joseph Murphy illuminated the severity of a SEVIS record termination, stating, "If you terminate the SEVIS, they are out of status. They have to go home." Murphy's observation, quoted in a WPXI interview, highlights the gravity of the situation for the impacted individuals. Carnegie Mellon has not disclosed reasons for the revocations, and the university said, "These incidents understandably raise wider concerns for many in our community," according to a release cited by WTAE.
International students at CMU are experiencing heightened anxiety, and some, like Rithik Balaram, a CMU grad student from India, shared with CBS News, "It's honestly very distressing." Adding to the unease, details from the Associated Press suggest that the government has been quietly terminating students' legal residency status with little warning, a shift from prior practices that could leave students susceptible to detention and deportation. Students have been advised to maintain contact with legal resources, stay updated on current events, and avoid trouble.
CMU has proactively contacted the impacted individuals to offer support and legal resources. The university is hosting an Open Forum on Immigration Policies on April 21st and is sponsoring private consultations with immigration attorneys to assist its international community further.
