The City of Cookeville is set to reveal its tribute to a local icon with the “Shining Bright Over Cookeville: 75 Years of the Cream City Sign” exhibit, featuring a deep dive into the history of one of the town's most recognizable landmarks—the Cream City Ice Cream sign. Starting tomorrow and running until May 24, the Cookeville History Museum will host this special exhibit, announced by the City of Cookeville Leisure Services, as visitors get to explore the history of the sign that has lit up downtown Cookeville for three-quarters of a century.
As the Cream City sign has watched over Cookeville, this exhibit will take visitors through its history, its relation to the local culture, and a broader look at the world events when the sign was first illuminated. Running the grounds, kids will have the chance to engage in an interactive art activity, while adults might be drawn to the original Cream City factory containers on display. Attendees to the opening reception tomorrow, set from 2 PM to 3:30 PM at the Cookeville History Museum, will have the first peek at the exhibit, with the added sweet treat of free ice cream—a nod to the product once produced under the glow of the historic neon sign.
In a statement obtained by the City of Cookeville's official announcement, Beth Thompson, Museum Manager, expressed her enthusiasm: "We are incredibly excited to share the story of the Cream City sign with our community! This exhibit brings together a wonderful collection of historical elements and offers a unique glimpse into a cherished part of Cookeville’s past.”
