Motorists in Chicago's 15th (Austin) District should be ready to encounter increased police scrutiny this weekend. The Chicago Police Department has announced a DUI Saturation Patrol from Friday, April 11 at 6 p.m. to Saturday, April 12 at 2 a.m. The operation aims to identify and address driving under the influence, as well as other traffic-related offenses, such as speeding and seatbelt violations.
Equipped with speed detection tools, officers will be monitoring traffic continually for signs of impaired driving. Deployed throughout a target area, the patrols are not just looking for DUIs, but are also keeping an eye on other infractions, including safety belt and alcohol-related offenses. Officers deployed for this patrol will also have the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit at their disposal. This will help expedite the process of charging individuals with DUI offenses before taking them for further processing.
The effectiveness of the DUI saturation patrols can be measured by looking at recent results from similar enforcement in the 9th (Deering) District. According to the Chicago Police Department's website, the patrol held on April 4-5 resulted in 30 citations in total. Specific outcomes included four unsafe vehicle violations, seven insurance violations, and five speeding charges among others. No driving under the influence or cellphone distracted driving citations were reported.
Furthermore, the BAT Mobile Unit contributes to the patrol's efficiency by providing on-site issuance of Individual Recognizance Bonds (I-Bonds). This immediate action, which serves to release an accused on their own recognizance, accelerates the process of dealing with DUI cases. The previous patrol in the 9th District saw one arrest and one vehicle towed, emphasizing the vigilance of these efforts to maintain public safety on the streets of Chicago.
