A Chinese national has been sentenced to 21 months in prison after pleading guilty to a charge involving elder fraud. Dongyi Guo, 28, was also hit with the requirement to pay back the $95,000 he obtained from a 79-year-old Missouri woman, as per the sentence handed down by U.S. District Judge John A. Ross yesterday.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office release, Guo's involvement in this heinous scheme targeted at the elderly began with conspiracy members contacting the victim back in March of 2024, a detail arising from the case documentation. Operating under the pretense of representing her financial institutions and the Social Security Office, the scammers informed the woman of allegedly compromised accounts, coercing her to hand over cash as protection from fictive thefts. Flying from New York to Chicago, Guo then transported himself to the woman's home in a rented car where, over three days, he collected the considerable sums of cash in increments—$40,000, followed by $35,000, and finally $20,000.
Guo's wrongdoing extended beyond the financial, impacting the well-being of the victim, who passed away seven months after the incident. According to a letter from the victim's daughter to the court, the crime "unquestionably contributed" to her deterioration and death. Scammers' exploitation of the elderly, as described in Guo's case, left this particular victim "mentally and physically broken, alone, and wanting to die," with alterations in her behavior like refusing medication and isolation from cherished activities, as detailed in the same release.
Guo was apprehended in an attempt to collect further money on March 7. His plea in the U.S. District Court in St. Louis last November acknowledged his role in the conspiracy to commit wire fraud. According to the case investigated by the Knox County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, Assistant U.S. Attorney Derek Wiseman led the prosecution efforts.
The Department of Justice maintains a National Elder Fraud Hotline at 1-833-FRAUD-11 (1-833-372-8311) to assist and direct victims or their acquaintances. Operating during the weekdays.
