In a coordinated move meant to ensure community safety, Chula Vista police, along with various task forces and the Marshals' services, conducted a comprehensive audit of registered sexual offenders across the city. As reported yesterday, this all-hands-on-deck effort involved more than 40 law enforcement officers participating in a citywide verification exercise.

This law enforcement initiative focused on checking compliance among individuals categorized under California's sex offender tier system. The system grades offenders from tier 1, deemed the lowest risk, to tiers 2 and 3, indicating higher risk levels. The Chula Vista Police Department spearheaded this operation with help from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, the U.S. Marshals San Diego Fugitive Task Force, and other members of the U.S. Marshals Service.

According to a document published by the Chula Vista Police Department, within the jurisdiction, there are 229 registered sex offenders. Of those, 169 fall into the higher risk categories of tiers 2 and 3. The audit was performed between 7 AM and 12 PM, during which home visits were conducted at listed addresses for registered tier 2 and 3 offenders, to verify their compliance with state law, specifically Penal Code 290, which mandates current information on residences, phone numbers, vehicles, and employment.

The audit results were substantial; out of 125 residences visited, authorities completed compliance checks for 140 individuals, while 20 checks are pending further visits. A summed total of "112 registrants were verified as being in compliance," and eight cases are still under review by detectives, according to the publication by the Chula Vista Police Department. Non-compliant individuals will be subject to arrest warrants sought by the Department.
