Last Tuesday, two Clay County deputies were involved in a shooting incident after responding to a distressing call about a possible suicide situation. According to a social media post by the Clay County Sheriff's Office, the deputies were alerted about a woman who appeared to be threatening to take her own life, even suggesting suicide by law enforcement.

Upon reaching the scene at 1717 County Road 220, deputies Tyler Elias and Justin Mosley reportedly encountered the individual, Heather Tipton, as she came around the corner armed with a firearm in one hand and her cellphone in the other. As Tipton continued to advance upon them, both deputies instructed her to, in no uncertain terms, drop her weapon. However, instead of complying, Tipton allegedly raised the handgun and pointed it at the deputies, prompting them to definitively open fire, striking her twice.

Tipton was transported to a medical facility following the incident and remains in a critical, yet stable condition, as per the latest update from the Sheriff’s Office. The deputies involved in this encounter did not sustain any injuries during the situation. Deputy Elias has been a member of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office for more than three years, and Deputy Mosley nears his fourth year of service with the department.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has taken the lead on the investigation into the shooting, working in conjunction with the State Attorney's Office. The Sheriff's Office has made it clear that all future updates on this matter will be disseminated by the FDLE.
