Clayton Police Department had its hands full the week of April 21-27, responding to a gamut of incidents, from traffic mishaps to frightful threats. An official rundown provided by the CPD, as per a recent news release, highlights the variety of challenges they faced.
Among the reported episodes was a multi-vehicle crash on the interstate that ended with two drivers feeling the pains of non-life-threatening injuries, as well as a curious case of a missing vehicle license plate with no suspect in sight. Monday also brought an arrest for a motorist who chose to obstruct traffic to quickly grab food while under the influence of marijuana. The week continued with the discovery of check fraud, when a resident found her check altered and cashed by an unknown party, prompting an investigation by the United States Postal Inspection Service. Traffic stops led to several arrests with uncanny consistency, unveiling suspended licenses and outstanding warrants.
A traffic stop in Clayton's east end on Tuesday revealed a woman with a suspended license and existing warrants, forcing her into facing an upcoming court date. Then officers encountered the shadow of a man trying to dodge their approach in a parking garage, only to learn that he had a ravenous appetite for theft, wanted by St. Charles Police Department. Midweek shifts saw accidents but no injuries, and broken headlights gleaming leads to the arrest of another driver with no valid license and burglaries in his wake.
An attorney's assistant received a chilling threat over the phone, a man returned from abroad to a bereft safe, and scammers audaciously impersonated Clayton officers in an attempt to con residents. One message of grave concern here: "Scammers often use fear tactics to rush victims into making bad decisions. Most importantly, never give personal or financial info over the phone to unsolicited callers." The week also saw hit-and-run incidents and a visitor in an apartment complex who was found to have more than laundry on her agenda, leading to her arrest, as reported by the Clayton Police Department.
The community's participation in events like Tons of Transportation and a Drug Take Back initiative garnered the department's gratitude. Real-life events in Clayton spell out a narrative of routine, fear, and community, all interwoven in the day-to-day life of those tasked to serve and protect.
