An incident involving Lake County sheriff's deputies has left a man dead in the Clermont area. Early reports indicate that the deputies were responding to a call regarding a suspicious person who was allegedly yelling at passing vehicles from the roadway and later banging on the door of a local residence, as per ClickOrlando.
The confrontation escalated when deputies arrived near Via Roma Circle, off Lake Louisa Road. They encountered 39-year-old Eric Escobar, who authorities say refused to show his hands when commanded. Following a refusal of the deputies' orders, Escobar reportedly brandished a handgun, leading to a deputy discharging their weapon. Escobar was pronounced dead at the crime scene, and no other injuries were reported, FOX 35 detailed.
In the aftermath of the shooting, standard procedures are being followed. The deputy involved has been placed on administrative leave. An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which is a normal practice in cases of officer-involved shootings. The identity of the deputy has not been made public at this time.
