The training sessions, which combined the traditional classroom setting with hands-on exercises, aimed to strengthen the team's response capabilities in the event of a railroad emergency.
Jon Rettig Jr of Norfolk Southern Railroad facilitated the Hazmat Technician Training, emphasizing critical aspects such as safe navigation around railway tracks, proper communication channels during emergencies, and comprehensive knowledge of tank cars' structure and functionality. According to a social media post from the Cleveland Fire Department, these sessions covered the essentials—"Railroad Emergencies; how to work around tracks safely, whom to notify, tank car anatomy, and how to identify different types of rail cars."
The practical side of the training saw team members engaging directly with rail car mock-ups, learning to institute immediate measures such as capping, plugging, and patching leaks that can be crucial in containing hazardous materials spills. This hands-on experience provided the firefighters with tangible skills, bolstering their preparedness for real-world scenarios.
