Cleveland is using this week’s Site Selectors Guild gathering to present more than local hospitality: its pitch combines available industrial land, redevelopment plans and a growing health-technology research base. About 300 corporate location advisers are expected for the conference hosted by Destination Cleveland and Team NEO, according to Cleveland.com.
The Guild’s members advise companies on where to expand, consolidate or build, making the gathering an opportunity to familiarize consultants with the region before they advise clients on confidential projects. The Guild says its members advised on decisions involving approximately 165,000 announced jobs and $90 billion in capital investment worldwide over a recent three-year period; that figure describes the group’s broader reach, not investment committed to Cleveland, according to the Site Selectors Guild.
The pitch starts with land that is not yet fully ready
A central part of Cleveland’s development case is The Midline, a planned 350-acre industrial corridor on the Near East Side. Its public goals include 1.5 million square feet of new space and 2,500 direct jobs, according to the Fund for Our Economic Future. The Midline’s project history says the Site Readiness for Good Jobs Fund acquired 7000 Central Avenue and adjacent industrial properties in 2024 to secure land for the redevelopment.
That strategy addresses a practical problem in corporate site selection: large parcels can appear available while still requiring ownership consolidation, environmental work or infrastructure upgrades. The City of Cleveland and Site Readiness for Good Jobs Fund describe much of The Midline area as long-vacant industrial land affected by contamination, fragmented ownership, aging infrastructure and high remediation costs, according to a project announcement published by the city and fund. Those conditions help explain why Cleveland is emphasizing site preparation alongside promotional visits.
The redevelopment plan remains a projection, not a completed industrial campus. The acquisition gives the region control of key property, but it does not by itself establish that the full acreage is shovel-ready or that the projected jobs will materialize.
A technology showcase with documented activity
The conference itinerary is scheduled to include a visit to Cleveland Clinic’s quantum-computing facility, where corporate leaders are expected to discuss why their companies operate in Cleveland, according to Cleveland.com. The facility houses IBM Quantum System One at the Cleveland Clinic Discovery Accelerator, which Cleveland Clinic and IBM unveiled in 2023 as a private-sector quantum computer dedicated to healthcare research, according to Cleveland Clinic.
The facility is more than a symbolic technology stop. Cleveland Clinic says its partnership with IBM has supported more than 50 projects, contributed to multiple peer-reviewed publications and developed an education curriculum aimed at building a future workforce. In a separate 2026 research announcement, Cleveland Clinic, RIKEN and IBM reported using quantum computers and supercomputers to simulate protein complexes spanning up to 12,635 atoms. Those results document research activity, but they do not demonstrate that the Guild visit will produce a corporate location decision.
Relationships are the immediate outcome; investment is not guaranteed
Destination Cleveland President and CEO David Gilbert told Cleveland.com that the Guild is a small group whose members’ familiarity with a region can influence assignments years later. The organization’s logic is therefore cumulative: Cleveland wants advisers to remember its sites, institutions and business community when a client’s requirements fit the region, rather than expecting a signed project during the conference.
The gathering follows a late-2025 effort by Mayor Justin M. Bibb, Team NEO, Destination Cleveland and Cuyahoga County officials to bring the 2026 meeting to Cleveland, according to the City of Cleveland. Guild members are scheduled to attend programming through Sept. 16, including a Monday reception at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, according to the Guild’s event listing.
Cleveland’s welcome bags—including Malley’s Chocolates, Graham + Fisk’s canned wine and Cleveland Candle Co. candles—are part of that relationship-building effort, Cleveland.com reported. But the measurable test will come later: whether advisers return with client inquiries, whether proposed sites clear the remaining development hurdles and whether any future corporate announcement can be linked to the region’s broader site-readiness work. No investment has been guaranteed by the conference itself.
