In a move that signals Colorado's sustained commitment to its rural economies, Governor Jared Polis, alongside the Office of Just Transition (OJT) and the Office of Economic Development and International Trade (OEDIT), has earmarked a $2 million grant for Moffat County's development of a new Multi-Use Events and Resiliency Center. The facility is part of a broader strategy to drive Moffat County’s economy forward, diversifying away from its historic reliance on coal.

According to OEDIT, the event center aims to bolster Moffat County's economic landscape by providing a venue for year-round events, which is expected to enhance the region's cultural offerings and boost its economy. Governor Polis expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "Colorado will continue investing in our rural communities, and their economies. This new grant will drive economic development in Moffat County, and I’m excited to see the impact this new facility will have in the community."

Wade Buchanan, Director of OJT, highlighted the significance of the undertaking, telling OEDIT, "The events and resiliency center should be a major catalyst to help Moffat County diversify its economy, attract new visitors to the community, and stimulate business creation and expansion." The center is not only a leap towards economic diversification but also a staunch effort in providing sustainable infrastructure. To this end, the building will adhere to LEED Gold standards, featuring geothermal and solar power systems for energy efficiency.

The project stands as a milestone within Moffat County’s economic diversification plan. Located at the Moffat County Fairgrounds, the facility will reside a convenient five blocks from downtown Craig, abutting an Urban Renewal Authority. The center's construction, along with the adjacent Craig Depot station, anticipates enhancing the area’s appeal to visitors and locals alike. OEDIT Executive Director Eve Lieberman emphasized the benefits of such a project, noting, "The construction of an event center will support business growth in the area and increase year-round event tourism in Northwest Colorado," as per OEDIT. In its first five years, the county’s sales tax revenue could see a gain of approximately $1.2 million, thanks in part to the new center.

The OJT and OEDIT have injected over $8 million into northwest Colorado’s local economic initiatives since 2022. These funds have supported a variety of ventures, including business parks, entrepreneurship centers, and outdoor recreation enhancements. The Just Transition Community Funding extends beyond Moffat County, reaching into Routt, Rio Blanco, as well as other counties across the state, thereby representing a substantial commitment to fostering resilient local economies throughout Colorado.
