Columbus Division of Fire's own Matthew Bailey has been honored with the prestigious American Legion Award of Excellence. The social media post from the Columbus Division of Fire outlined the award ceremony, which took place last Saturday, praising Bailey for his 29 years of unwavering service to the community. Battalion Chief Sean Devlin nominated Bailey, drawing particular attention to his nearly three-decade service at one of the city's busiest fire stations and continued dedication to mentorship within the division.
In his nomination, Chief Devlin underscored Bailey's professional endurance, stating through the Columbus Division of Fire, “Matt has served the citizens of the City of Columbus for 29 dedicated years. Matt has spent 28 of those years at one of the busiest fire stations in the city (Station 14)." Bailey often volunteers to ride Medic 14, retaining a hands-on approach despite his seniority that enables him to step away from the front lines should he choose. This exemplary commitment not only reflects his loyalty to the job but has also made him a model employee for Columbus and a guiding force for the upcoming generation of firefighters.
Devlin's commendation continued, highlighting the profound impact Bailey has had as a leader. "FF Bailey approaches his work with true professionalism, always volunteering without hesitation. FF Bailey demonstrates a deep commitment to the community, showing compassion and empathy on every call,” said Devlin. Notably, Bailey exhibits leadership skills that stand out, whether on an emergency scene or during the training of new division recruits, despite not being in an official supervisory role. The Columbus Division of Fire shared this commendation in their announcement of Bailey's award.
The recognition by the American Legion reflects Bailey's dedication not only to the craft but also to the people he serves. The Columbus Division of Fire celebrated the award as "well-deserved," showcasing how Bailey embodies the kind of relentless spirit that often goes unnoticed yet provides solidity and reassurance to a community's everyday safety. This accolade highlights everyday heroes like Bailey, who dedicate their lives to service with passion and resilience.
