An attempt to smuggle contraband into the Rowan County Detention Center has been thwarted, with a jail employee's termination and the arrest of four individuals. In a detailed investigation that culminated in a significant bust, deputies discovered a suspicious package on April 1, which contained suboxone strips and tablets, along with tobacco products. The package was found near the detention center's rear entry, as reported by WBTV.
Following the evidence trail, an employee contracted through the detention center’s food service provider was identified, after accepting funds from inmate Justin Webster, was fired. The individual allegedly introduced tobacco into the facility in exchange for the money. All four implicated in the smuggling operation, Justin Ray Webster, Amber Purser, Joseph Montgomery, and James Webster were charged with conspiracy to commit a felony. Despite being charged in the same case, they were slapped with different bond amounts due to varying degrees of involvement and prior criminal activities, as detailed by the Salisbury Post.
The investigation's focus pointed to inmate Justin Ray Webster as the key player, coordinating with Amber Purser, Joseph Montgomery, and his father, James Webster, to orchestrate the smuggling scheme. Through their cooperative efforts, they aimed to introduce illegal contraband into the penal institution. Notably, James Webster's $20,000 secured bond was higher than the others involved, affected by an additional probation violation, according to details obtained by the QC News.
This case remains under active investigation, with the possibility that charges may be brought against the terminated employee.
