David Powers, a man convicted of rape, kidnapping, and domestic assault, met his end in a series of harrowing events culminating on a Texas highway, according to authorities. Escaping legal retribution, Powers' fall was literal as much as it was metaphorical; after absconding from his trial, he jumped off a bridge in San Antonio and attempted to hijack a vehicle before dying from his injuries in a local hospital. The chaotic end to Powers' flight from justice was confirmed by the San Antonio Police Department.
After skipping his trial in Minnesota, Powers was facing the specter of decades behind bars. Instead, officers found Powers assaulting a good Samaritan after forcibly extracting them from their vehicle, which was in an attempt to stop and assist him. As reported by CBS News Minnesota, Powers was detained shortly after the attack on Highway Loop 410 and was later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, succumbing to his injuries.
Earlier that week, despite Powers' absence, the trial had marched on. A jury convicted him of first-degree criminal sexual conduct alongside other grave charges. The conviction was based on a criminal complaint that painted a grisly picture of abuse. Powers was accused of a prolonged and vicious attack against his ex-girlfriend in her own home. FOX 7 Austin shared harrowing details from the victim, Chandra McFarland, who recounted how Powers became violent after a night out in May 2023, preventing her from escaping and cutting her off from the outside world.
According to McFarland's statements obtained by FOX 7 Austin, Powers' attack was relentless, involving strangulation, physical blows, and sexual assault, terrorizing her for hours. Only after concerns were raised by her employer did law enforcement intervene, arriving to see her pleading for help from an upper-level window, before being yanked back by Powers. It was this horrifying scene that deputies interrupted, breaking into the apartment to arrest the abuser.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Powers' death is ongoing. However, this final act of desperation has closed the case on a man that the justice system had branded a serious threat to public safety. This unraveling tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the often dangerous and unpredictable nature of individuals on the brink, as well as the profound impact their actions have on the lives of survivors.
