The City of Cookeville is on the lookout for contractors to undertake the construction of new sidewalks along SR-24, better known as East Spring Street. According to an announcement on the city's official website, the bid is for a project that includes building approximately 2,400 feet of 5-foot-wide sidewalks. These are to stretch from just west of Carlen Avenue to Raider Drive and along Carlen Avenue, running from SR-24 to the school.
Prospective bidders should note that the work is not just limited to slapping down some concrete—it encompasses installing curb and gutter systems accompanied by a 2-foot grass buffer strip, painting crosswalks, implementing stormwater drainage improvements, replacing guardrail as needed, and constructing ADA-compliant curb ramps. For pedestrians familiar with the challenges of navigating the area, the upcoming upgrades signal a move toward safer and more accessible travel. The project is not solely a city initiative—it’s also supported by the Tennessee Department of Transportation through a Multi-Modal Access Grant.
Contractors hoping to throw their hats into the ring must prequalify with the Department of Transportation, as dictated by Section 54-5-117 of the "Tennessee Code Annotated" and related Department rules on contractor prequalification. Bid proposals will not be furnished to those who have not completed the required prequalification process, a stipulation that underscores the city's serious approach to the infrastructure improvement project.
Those interested should keep an eye on the city's website for updates on the bidding process and subsequent project commencement details.
