Two students from Deer Park High School-South Campus are now in the hospital following an incident in which they were struck by a vehicle, operated by a fellow student, in the school parking lot. This occurred on Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m., according to KHOU. The Deer Park Independent School District police reported that the driver was engaging in reckless behavior at the time of the incident.
The victims, whose names haven’t been released, were taken to the hospital with head injuries but are expected to recover. The driver, also a Deer Park High School student, is facing two charges of reckless aggravated assault. School officials explained that the students were on a testing schedule that day, which allowed some to leave early when the accident occurred, as per KHOU.
Further details provided by ABC13 reveal that the collision happened near the Abshier Stadium parking lot. Lt. Chris Brown of the Deer Park police gave a statement to ABC13 indicating that, "the incident happened at about 9:30 a.m. when a student was driving recklessly and knocked the two students to the ground." The two victims, a boy and a girl, were conscious following the incident and were later stabilized at the hospital.
Investigations are ongoing, and the Deer Park ISD has not provided any further comments on whether there will be changes to the campus parking policies or supervision following this event. Information regarding the arraignment or legal representation for the charged student has yet to be disclosed.
