DeKalb County marked Earth Day 2025 with a reaffirmation of its commitment to a sustainable future. Echoing the EARTHDAY.ORG's theme for the year, "our power, our planet," local officials spotlighted the need for education, advocacy, and community involvement in combating climate change. The County has long been recognized for its sustainability efforts, including earning the Gold Level recognition from the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities Program and making strides in replacing traditional fuel with alternative options in its vehicle fleet.

Concerns over climate change effects, like extreme weather and its impact on public health and the economy, continue to drive action at the county level. The County is not a stranger to such challenges. As part of the ongoing efforts, the region has invested in green infrastructure, totalling 59 miles of greenways and trails that support both recreational and transportation needs. In a statement obtained by DeKalb County's official news release, CEO Cochran-Johnson expressed “As CEO, it is my desire to foster greater intergenerational awareness and support for policies, projects and behavioral changes that embody social and environmental stewardship.”

Back in 2021, Super District 6 Commissioner Ted Terry spearheaded a resolution eyeing a future powered exclusively by clean energy and clean transportation by 2050. This ambition was cemented by the Board of Commissioners’ approval, setting a target of 100% renewable energy across all sectors by mid-century. Commissioner Terry emphasized the dual benefits of such initiatives, telling DeKalb County News, "Sustainability and ‘going green’ is foundationally about improving our environment - cleaner air, purer water, and a healthier quality of life for everyone."
