In a somber announcement, Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the violent attack on Denton County Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell and her husband, Fred Mitchell. According to a statement released by the governor's office, Fred Mitchell succumbed to his injuries following the incident at their home.
"Cecilia and I are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Commissioner Bobbie Mitchell’s husband, Fred Mitchell, after they were brutally attacked in their home this morning," Governor Abbott said. Expressing gratitude toward the Lewisville Police Department and other first responders, the governor's statement also highlighted the speed at which they acted to provide aid. The governor and his wife extended their thoughts and prayers to Commissioner Mitchell as she recovers and to the loved ones of Fred Mitchell as they face his tragic loss.
Bobbie Mitchell holds a prominent position within Texas state governance, having been appointed by Abbott in 2023 to serve on the Commission on State Emergency Communications. Her term, slated to run until September 1, 2029, has her in a key role overseeing the administration of vital state services, including the state 9-1-1 service program and the statewide poison control program.
