Motorists in Detroit should plan for detours this weekend due to a freeway closure for bridge demolition work. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that a section of I-94 will be closed in both directions between I-75 and M-3 (Gratiot Avenue) from 8 p.m. tomorrow, until 5 a.m. on Monday next week, as per ClickonDetroit report. The closure is necessary for the removal of the McClellan Avenue overpass, which has been deemed structurally unsound.

For detours, westbound I-94 traffic will be rerouted via southbound M-3 and northbound I-75, while eastbound traffic will detour via southbound I-75 and northbound M-3. In addition, all entrance ramps to westbound I-94 from Cadieux Road to M-3, and entrance ramps to eastbound I-94 from West Grand Boulevard to M-53, will be closed before the weekend closure begins. These ramps will reopen by early Monday morning.

The McClellan Avenue overpass, built in 1957, was closed in March 2024 due to safety concerns and will not be replaced as part of upcoming improvements to the I-94/M-3 interchange, according to Michigan Department of Transportation.
