Early yesterday morning, Detroit authorities were alerted to a tragic scene where a man was found deceased near a burning car in the city's east side. CBS News Detroit reports that the Detroit Fire Department received a call about 4:20 a.m regarding a vehicle fire in a vacant lot situated at the 11100 block of Lappin Street, between 7 Mile and Hoover roads. What they encountered was a burning RV, a car, and additional objects engulfed in flames.
Upon extinguishing the fires, a subsequent inspection by fire officials led to the grim discovery of a burned body inside the nearby car, which had not been reported as the one on fire. According to information acquired by ClickOnDetroit, police indicated that the body was found inside a vehicle that was separate from the one reported ablaze. The Detroit Police Department has since launched an investigation into the incident, which has so far not revealed any immediate threat to the public.
This incident occurs in the shadow of another, yet unresolved, tragedy on the city's west side, where two women and a child were found dead inside a burning car just ten days prior. Audacy notes that while no murder charges have been filed in that case, authorities have apprehended a Detroit man on multiple counts, including resisting and obstructing police, deeming him a "person of interest".
As this latest investigation continues, officials have withheld the victim's identity, and details surrounding the circumstances of the death are still under investigation. The Detroit Police Department has dispatched arson investigators to the scene to piece together the unfolding narrative.
