A chaotic scene unfolded on the South Causeway bridge in New Smyrna Beach as Boyd Cosner, identified as the driver responsible for a high-speed chase and subsequent multi-vehicle crash, remains in stable condition. The incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon, began when New Smyrna Beach police received reports of a reckless driver, which led to a pursuit by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. Authorities attempted to pull over Cosner on 3rd Avenue and South Peninsula Ave, but he fled towards the bridge at dangerous speeds, according to ClickOrlando.
In a statement detailed by WFTV, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department noted that the suspect caused the accident that closed State Road 44 at the South Causeway bridge. Cosner's car struck multiple vehicles on the bridge. He was reported to have received two traffic citations for careless driving and a seatbelt violation. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office also expects charges for fleeing and eluding.
The crash involved at least five vehicles and prompted a complete shutdown of the bridge for several hours, disrupting traffic. After deputies lost visual contact with Cosner's vehicle as it sped over the bridge, he crashed on the west side of it near Magnolia Street. The aftermath saw another individual transported to the hospital and later discharged, FOX 35 Orlando reported.
While the New Smyrna PD, with assistance from the Volusia County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Highway Patrol, continues to investigate the incident, the magnitude of the situation underscores a terrifying episode of dangerous driving behaviors.
