A Duluth man was apprehended earlier this week on multiple drug charges after a coordinated operation between local law enforcement agencies. According to a recent press release by the Duluth Police Department, Michael Vann, 63, was detained during a traffic stop on Tuesday, April 15, in which officers discovered he was carrying a substantial amount of illegal substances.
It was at about 10:45 a.m. when officers from the Duluth Police Department, the Hermantown Police Department, and the Lake Superior Violent Offender Task Force acted on their plan to swiftly execute a search warrant on Vann's residence, located on the 700 block of North 7th Avenue East. Vann, however, was stopped at a location away from his home. Upon his detention, law enforcement found him in possession of 137 grams of suspected methamphetamine and 40 grams of cocaine, along with $1,980 in cash.
The search of Vann’s residence yielded additional illicit materials. Officers seized another 62 grams of cocaine, 3 grams of meth, and $2,956 in cash. Moreover, they uncovered "numerous different types of ammunition and several digital scales and evidence of drug sales," indicating a broader involvement in narcotics distribution. These details, shared by the Duluth Police Department, point to a more substantial operation than initially apparent from the street-level arrest.
The subsequent investigation and search warrant execution are part of broader efforts to curtail drug trafficking in the area. Following these finds, Vann was taken to the St. Louis County Jail and is being held on charges of 1st Degree Sale of Meth, 1st Degree Sale of Cocaine, and Felon in Possession of Ammunition, along with an outstanding warrant from the Department of Corrections. The collaborative action by the DPD, HPD, and LSVOTF was remarked upon as "good work" by the agencies involved for safely conducting the operation and ensuring to hold Vann was held accountable for his actions.
Community safety and the continual fight against local crime remain a top priority for Duluth law enforcement, as evidenced by these latest efforts. The success of this operation reflects the ongoing commitment of local agencies to work collectively to proactively respond to and disrupt illegal activities, aiming to maintain the peace and well-being of the residents in the region.
