A pre-dawn blaze ripped through the Bay Colony Apartments in South Tampa yesterday, leading to injuries for one individual and displacing numerous residents. According to WFLA News, Tampa Fire Rescue crews were dispatched shortly after 3 a.m. to confront heavy smoke and flames bursting from the structure’s second floor.
The inferno required firefighters to rapidly evacuate after an initial entry as the situation deteriorated, making it necessary to instead tackle the fire from an exterior position. "Firefighters entered the apartment but were soon evacuated as conditions deteriorated," ABC Action News reported. Crews achieved control over the flames within an hour and fifteen minutes, yet the aftermath left nearly 20 units affected by the fire's wrath.
The consequence of this conflagration was not without a human toll, as Fox 13 News notes, "One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries." Thereafter, firefighters conducted a thorough search of the damaged units, fortunately finding no other residents within. The task of investigating the cause of the fire is currently underway by TFR's fire investigators, further details of which have yet to be disclosed.
In response to the displacement of affected individuals, the American Red Cross has stepped in to assist families in the aftermath of the fire. "The American Red Cross is working with families displaced by the fire," according to a statement obtained by Fox 13 News. Images shared by the fire department starkly exhibit the blaze as it consumed the building, highlighting the scale and intensity of the emergency response that was required to finally quench the fire's spread.
