Tragedy struck early this morning when a fatal crash claimed a life on Interstate 77 Southbound near Davidson. According to information released by the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to WSOC-TV, the accident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on I-77 SB at Langtree Road. The crash led to a significant shutdown of the thoroughfare as investigators worked the scene.
The resulting road closure caused considerable congestion, with traffic maps displaying heavy backups that extended up to Mooresville. Drivers were forced to sit through delays or seek alternate routes as officials worked to clear and eventually reopen the lanes. As reported by WBTV, the congestion persisted well into the morning, with normal traffic flow not resuming until around 6:40 a.m. Despite the reopening of the interstate, motorist were still experiencing slower movement due to residual backups.
During the closure, state officials directed drivers to use North Carolina State Highway 115 as an alternate route to circumvent the gridlock.
