El Paso is prepping for a windswept week ahead, according to the National Weather Service. Residents can expect to see patchy blowing dust this afternoon with sunny conditions prevailing and a high nearing 90 degrees. A northwest wind that starts at a mild 5 to 10 mph will pick up, intensifying to 15 to 20 mph later in the day, with possible gusts up to 25 mph.
As night falls, the dusty conditions should subside before 7 pm. The skies will turn partly cloudy as temperatures drop to around 64 degrees, although winds will persist, blowing from the west at 15 to 20 mph before tapering off after midnight, as reported by the National Weather Service. Come Monday, El Pasoans can expect a partly sunny sky, again, with calm winds that will shift southwest at a gentle 5 to 8 mph in the morning.
The rest of the week seems to follow a similar pattern. Tuesday's forecast predicts sunny skies with high temperatures in the lower 80s and gusty east winds reaching up to 28 mph. Evening winds will lighten somewhat, but gusts could still hit 22 mph. Wednesday will usher in more sunshine and a climb back up to temperatures around 89 degrees, with south to west southwest winds bringing potential gusts of 22 mph.
Thursday, the city will see another round of patchy blowing dust after noon, a reminder that spring in the desert is not just a matter of heat, but of wind. Expect sunny conditions with another high near 88 degrees, as southwest winds strengthen to 18 to 23 mph in the afternoon, and gusts that could reach a formidable 34 mph. The NWS advises caution for drivers and those with respiratory issues during these dust events.
Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecast suggests a slight cooldown with highs dropping to the low 80s on Friday, and even further to 77 by Saturday. A 20 percent chance of showers Friday night creeps up to a 30 percent chance by Saturday. This developing weather pattern might bring some relief to the dusty conditions that have characterized the greater part of the coming week.
