Students in El Paso will take the field for the 7th annual Unidos Games, a two-day event today and tomorrow, aimed at celebrating their abilities and fostering a sense of community. Once again, Burgess High School's athletic field will be teeming with energy as over 500 elementary students showcase their talents on the first day, followed by an equally enthusiastic group of middle and high school athletes the next day. El Paso ISD reported that these students, who have been diligently training, will participate in competitions including biking, walking, and running.
Launched in March 2018, the Unidos Games has established itself as an important districtwide tradition, one that not only applauds student achievements but also strengthens bonds within the El Paso educational community. Nelson Ortega, debuting as a special education instructor at this year's games, told El Paso ISD, “Unidos Games provides an opportunity for our students to collaborate and gives them a sense of belonging.”
Apart from competition, preparation is a key aspect of this event, underscoring the students' unwavering commitment accompanied by strong guidance. “We prepare them for performance training—we work with them every day, track how they’re doing, and help them improve while staying engaged,” Ortega added, according to an El Paso ISD news release, showcasing the rigorous process that invites students to reach their potential while remaining connected with their peers.
This annual event serves as a powerful demonstration of the district's commitment to fostering environments where all students have the opportunity to shine brightly, according to statements made by Baca and Day in an El Paso ISD article.
