As the TEDx Socorro Roots 2025 event gears up for a day steeped in cultural exploration and personal narratives, one presenter stands out with a particularly compelling story. El Paso Community College's own Christina Diaz, a sign language interpreter with more than three decades of experience in education, is set to take the stage. According to EPCC News, Christina will share insights from an article she penned in 2020 that found a platform in the National Deaf Journal.
This year's TEDx theme, "Roots," promises to delve into the diverse threads that weave together the fabric of identity and origin. Diaz’s story is a testament to that very concept, being an El Paso native, a first-generation high school and college graduate, and a single mother who managed to tirelessly pursue her education while raising two children. Her experience encapsulates the essence of the theme, set to not only resonate deeply with attendees but also to implicitly shake up the normative narrative around achievement and success.
Joining Diaz in this array of speakers are Deborah Maldonado, Michael Guajardo, Chelsie Uvaldi, Asha Rodriguez, and Manuel Vasquez, as mentioned by EPCC News. Each speaker brings forth their unique perspective, rooted in the local area, and for most, the connection to Socorro runs deep, adding authenticity and relevance to the conversations on stage.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., will be held at the Moonlight Adobe Hall on Socorro Road. In a bid to reflect local culture, it will showcase local food, feature a salsa bar, and have craft beer offerings from Three Missions Brewery. Beyond being an intellectual haven, it seems determined to also cater to the palates of its visitors.
