An electric bike rider is dead and his passenger is seriously injured after a collision with a pickup truck at a Las Vegas intersection. The fatal incident, which marks the city's 56th traffic-related death this year, happened last Sunday evening, April 28, according to a Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department report.
The collision occurred as a 2017 Ram 1500 traveled southbound on North Jones Boulevard, while a Segway Xyber electric bike, carrying two riders, was heading eastbound on West Eugene Avenue. Tragically, the electric bike operator, whose name has not yet been released, failed to properly stop at a posted sign, entering the truck's path and resulting to violently collide with the pickup's front right side. The impact caused both riders to be thrown from the bike, detailing a mishap that could have possibly been avoided with more cautious navigation of the road's rules.
Emergency Medical Personnel responded to the scene and rushed the juvenile electric bike passenger, who has been identified as Guadalupe Carlos Angel Chavez, 18, to University Medical Center with substantial injuries. The operator, just 16 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ram, 60-year-old Gene Cosse, stayed after the accident and cooperated with investigators. His passenger, 44-year-old Travis Wixom, also sustained minor injuries.
