In a notable showing this past weekend, the El Paso Community College (EPCC) Tejanos baseball team went head-to-head with the Odessa College Wranglers, leaders of the Western Junior College Athletic Conference. The home series ended in a stalemate, with each team claiming two games in the intense matchups. The Tejanos emerged victorious in the Friday opener, besting the Wranglers with a 7-2 score, but later stumbled in the second game, ending in a tight 4-2 loss.
Saturday's doubleheader saw the Tejanos again triumph in the first game, an extra-innings nail-biter that ended 9-8, largely thanks to Sal Rocha's birthday heroics. Rocha delivered not just a three-run homer but also the winning sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. However, the celebration was short-lived as the Wranglers took the final game in a decisive 13-4 victory, according to EPCC News.
With this series wrapped, the Tejanos' record now stands at 30-14, 12-12 in conference play, positioning them in fifth place within the WJCAC. The team is scheduled to head to Roswell, New Mexico, for an upcoming four-game series against the New Mexico Military Institute Broncos, beginning Friday, April 18. The Broncos currently hold an even 21-21 overall record with a 9-15 mark in conference. The home team fans can look forward to one remaining series at EPCC, set against Clarendon College on April 25-26.
The EPCC softball team, meanwhile, had a rough stint on the road, dropping all four games against Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas. Faced with challenging play, the Tejanos (15-17, 8-8) succumbed to the Westerners (17-29, 8-8) on Friday, 5-4 and 7-1, and again on Saturday, 6-3 and 13-2. After an Easter weekend break, softball will return for its final home series of the season, hosting Midland College on April 25-26.
