
Portland has officially appointed Eric Engstrom as the new director of the Portland Bureau of Planning and Sustainability (BPS), following an extensive hiring process. Engstrom, known for his nearly 30 years of service with the city, steps up from his role as interim director since May 2024 to now take on the permanent position, as announced by Deputy City Administrator for Community and Economic Development Donnie Oliveira. According to a statement on the City of Portland's website, Oliveira views Engstrom's "leadership experience, strategic vision, and deep understanding of Portland’s planning and climate landscape" as key qualifications for spearheading the bureau’s future initiatives.
The appointment marks a significant step for Portland's efforts in enhancing sustainability practices and community development. Engstrom's track record includes pivotal roles in strategic planning and zoning reform, which have shaped the city's approach to urban development. In his statement provided to the City of Portland, Engstrom expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "I’m excited to lead BPS during this important moment of change and opportunity and with an amazing staff." His focus will include guiding smart urban development and implementing strategies that align with the city's evolving governmental structure.
