Former Pikesville High School athletic director Dazhon Darien received a four-month sentence after pleading guilty to disturbing school operations by creating a racist deep fake audio recording of the school's principal, Eric Eiswert. The sentencing took place in the Baltimore County Circuit Court today, as reported by WMAR2 News. The elaborate scheme involved Darien using Artificial Intelligence technology to impersonate Eiswert, resulting in a scandal within the school system and leading to threats against the principal. Eiswert had previously indicated Darien as the suspected individual behind the recording.
The AI-generated recording, which falsely depicted Eiswert delivering a hate-filled rant, caused significant damage to his professional standing and personal life. Authorities ultimately linked the creation and dissemination of the recording to Darien, revealing that he had purchased a voice cloning application and generated the deepfake using snippets from private conversations with Eiswert. This digital footprint was tied back to Darien's home IP address and PayPal account, as stated in court documents cited by WMAR2 News. The incriminating email containing the AI recording was sent under the alias TJ FOUST, a persona later connected to Darien's phone number and his grandmother's home in Los Angeles.
According to WBAL-TV, Darien's court appearance today is also notable as he took an Alford plea, accepting the plea agreement without admitting to the specific act of using AI to mimic Eiswert. This case, one of the first of its kind in Maryland, highlights the growing concern over the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Moreover, Darien is grappling with unrelated federal charges involving the sexual exploitation of children, as mentioned by WJLA.
Principal Eiswert has since filed a lawsuit against Darien, the Baltimore County Board of Education, and the school district, according to court records. The suit alleges a conspiracy between district employees to spread the defamatory recording.
