Preparing to tackle his administration’s foremost policies, Executive Ryan Mello will be addressing the Pierce County Council this coming Tuesday. According to the official Pierce County announcement, the discussion will center around three key legislative items that align with Mello's "Forward Together" vision, which is dedicated to crafting spaces that are secure, inclusive, and interconnected for all residents.
On the agenda is a legislative measure, referred to as E-Verify -O2025-510, which proposes eliminating the existing employment eligibility verification requirement. Believed by some to be a tedious protocol and burdensome duplication due to the already mandatory I-9 form, Mello's administration is poised to streamline the employment verification process.
In a move reflective of the state's attitude towards immigration, Mello is standing behind Resolution R2025-139 — the Immigration Enforcement Resolution. Originally outlined in a directive from March, it reinforces Pierce County's commitment to the Keep Washington Working Act. As stated in a previous announcement, the resolution also aims to clarify Pierce County’s limited role in enforcing immigration laws, reiterating its stance on the local government's involvement in federal immigration matters.
Transportation safety is another pillar of Mello’s platform. Vision Zero -R2025-132 is a resolution that spearheads a comprehensive plan to eliminate all traffic-related deaths and serious injuries within the county by 2035. According to the details laid out, Mello regards safer streets and sidewalks as one of the utmost priorities for the community’s welfare.
