A fatal incident unfolded on Detroit's west side when a traffic stop led to a deadly crash involving a stolen vehicle. Detroit Police Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett confirmed to WWJ Newsradio that the crash happened around 8 p.m. last Friday at the intersection of Murray Hill Street and Puritan Avenue. During a press conference, Pritchett said that the pursuit began when officers from the 12th precinct "attempted to initiate a traffic stop, and the suspect fled."
The chase concluded tragically when officers, having attempted to quickly return to their vehicle to give chase, later came across "smoke" and found two cars with "heavy accident damage," according to WWJ Newsradio. The driver of the stolen vehicle had abandoned the scene but was arrested "several houses away," said Pritchett. The same source indicated that a man in his sixties was fatally injured when the suspect's car crashed into his vehicle.
The suspect, a man in his twenties, was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. FOX 2 Detroit reported that the vehicle the suspect had been driving was reported stolen from Redford. Authorities had also been seeking the suspect on charges of Aggravated Assault from an incident in Eastpointe.
