The Federal Bureau of Investigation is commemorating a milestone this week—45 years since the establishment of its first Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF). According to an FBI press release, it was the New York division that pioneered this model, setting a standard for interagency efforts to combat terrorism. The Phoenix field office followed suit, inaugurating their JTTF in 1994 as part of this national strategy.
These JTTFs, now a staple in all 55 FBI field offices, unite professionals from various disciplines—investigators, intelligence analysts, linguists, and tactical experts. Celebrated by the FBI Phoenix Special Agent in Charge Jose A. Perez, with nearly two dozen law enforcement agencies from around Arizona brought together, the Phoenix JTTF reflects a diverse cross-section of expertise. "We take tremendous pride in our partnerships with Arizona’s law enforcement agencies that focus every day on keeping our communities safe," Perez said, as per the FBI announcement. "Each of our partners brings unique skill sets to our JTTF making us all that much stronger together."
Tracing its roots to 1979 with a focus on violent bank robberies, the JTTFs adapted to a changing threat landscape. Following the chaos of terrorist activities in the 1980s, the model was officially formed in April 1980 to address the rising tide of such challenges. The strategy was galvanized after the tragic events of 9/11 when the need for a coordinated, national response to terrorism became more pronounced, prompting the creation of JTTFs across all FBI field offices and the establishment of the National Joint Terrorism Task Force (NJTTF) in 2002.
The NJTTF operates from the FBI Headquarters, striving to streamline communication and foster collaboration among partner agencies. Regular executive board meetings convened by the FBI Phoenix JTTF are integral, ensuring the sustained flow of communication and coordination crucial for public protection. Nearly 20 law enforcement agencies from around Arizona, their participation in the JTTF speaks to the regional commitment to these important collaborative efforts for maintaining safety and security.
