The conclusion of a massive Medicaid fraud case came as the Florida Attorney General's office announced the arrest of Joseph Chacon, the last suspect involved in a scheme that siphoned over $5 million from the state's Medicaid program. Chacon was apprehended at Orlando International Airport last Wednesday, ending a lengthy investigation into the deceptive operations led by Jose Enrique Hernandez Fernandez, the orchestrator behind Sweet Transportation LLC.
According to WFTV, Chacon and his co-defendants billed Medicaid for thousands of trips that never occurred. The company owned by Hernandez Fernandez, which had contracted to provide non-emergency medical transportation to Medicaid recipients, was at the center of the controversy, with GPS data indicating that drivers often submitted claims while they were at home, on vacation, or even from out of state. The attorney general stressed that, "This scheme defrauded Florida taxpayers and diverted resources meant for patients in need," which was captured in the acting up of the Medicaid fraud unit relentlessly pursuing anyone trying to profit from such exploitation.
As detailed by WFLA, Chacon faced charges of an organized scheme to defraud when he was arrested on an outstanding warrant upon his return to the United States after Costa Rican officials declined his extradition request. The arrest marked the culmination of a series of legal actions that began with the apprehension of twenty co-defendants back in October 2023.
Meanwhile, a statement published by the Office of the Attorney General conveyed AG Uthmeier's satisfaction with the capture of the final defendant, saying, "With the arrest of the final defendant, justice is catching up to every individual who thought they could exploit the Medicaid system." The multi-agency effort coordinated with the FBI and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement led to Chacon's detention at customs, where, subsequently, he was turned over to the Orlando Police Department, and he now faces the consequences of the felony charge leveled against him.
