Early this morning, a significant fire engulfed a triple-decker home on Albion Street in Malden, Massachusetts, drawing an immediate response from local firefighters who worked tirelessly to contain the blaze and rescue its trapped residents. According to NBC Boston, the fire, which was reported around 6 a.m., presented "tough conditions" due to the building's slate roof and complex structure, but fire crews were successful in their efforts to knock down the flames and ensure all inhabitants were accounted for.
The ordeal resulted in two individuals sustaining injuries. The first, a male resident, escaped with an arm injury, while the second, an elderly man, required rescue by firefighters and subsequently received hospital treatment for smoke inhalation. The incident unfolded while the community was just beginning its day. Crews persisted at the scene, ensuring that remnants of the fire were extinguished and safety restored. WHDH reports that by 7:30 a.m., the smoke had largely abated, although firefighters were still actively managing the aftermath of the fire.
Deputy Fire Chief James Dockery highlighted the challenges faced during the operation, saying, "We had tough conditions -- the roof was slate, we had a basement apartment, multiple units cut up, hard to acess," he told NBC Boston. Following the quelling of the fire, attention turned to the displaced families, with the American Red Cross stepping in to assist three families in finding alternative accommodations after the incident. Meanwhile, no firefighters sustained injuries in the course of duty, which stands as a testament to their professionalism and commitment to safeguarding their community from the ravages of disaster.
