Last night, multiple fire crews responded to a structure fire on the 2200 block of Piedmont Avenue in Duluth, finding a commercial space with an apartment on fire. According to official reports, the Duluth Fire Department arrived promptly at the scene after being alerted at 8:59 pm. Visible smoke was seen coming from the back side of the upper floor as the tenant self-evacuated without injury.
The fire, which saw firefighters from downtown, Duluth Heights, Lincoln Park, Spirit Valley, and UMD converging to quell the flames, was efficiently knocked down. Though thankfully, there were no injuries reported, the blaze left two residents without a home and caused an estimated $80,000 in damage to the property. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal's office.
In a display of interagency collaboration, the firefighting efforts were assisted by the Duluth Police Department, Minnesota Power, and Saint Louis County 911 Dispatch. The synergistic response undoubtedly played a crucial role in the swift containment of the incident, which could have potentially resulted in more severe damage or injury had these entities not worked cohesively.
For now, the affected residents are confronted with the sudden displacement from their homes, as the community and local aid organizations work to provide the necessary support in the aftermath of the fire. More details on the investigation will be expected as the Fire Marshal continues to unravel the circumstances leading up to the incident. Meanwhile, the fire department has been praised for their rapid and effective response to what could have been a devastating event for the residents of Piedmont Avenue.
