A somber gathering in Detroit turned to violence yesterday afternoon as five family members were shot following an altercation outside a residence in the 14500 block of Sussex Street. According to FOX 2 Detroit, the conflict, which escalated from a disagreement between two brothers, resulted in two men being critically injured and at least three other relatives wounded.
The dispute, rooted in a family matter related to the loss of their mother earlier in the day, spiraled out of control around 4 p.m. when a physical fight caused a gun to slip from one of the brother's waistbands. "Another brother picks it up and fires a shot," Assistant Chief Charles Fitzgerald of the Detroit Police Department explained, as reported by CBS News Detroit. The ensuing firefight led others to return fire in what appeared to be an attempt at defense.
After the shooting, three individuals have been taken into custody, while two brothers, aged 53 and 57, are listed in critical condition due to injuries sustained during the incident. Those wounded include three women, aged 51, 31, and 23, who suffered temporary serious injuries, as detailed by police statements.
Addressing the chaos, Fitzgerald told FOX 2 Detroit, "I don't know what to make of it. In 31 years on this job this is one of the crazier ones I've heard." The investigation continues to untangle the exact sequence of events with all the people shot sharing the same last name, indicating a domestic dispute that turned tragically violent. Meanwhile, bullets also struck a nearby house during the shooting, according to officials.
