A grim series of events unfolded in Larimer County earlier this month, involving a high-speed chase, a body found set on fire, and a subsequent arrest near Mead. According to KDVR, two suspects are now facing first-degree murder charges relating to these incidents. On April 11th, responders at the Stevens Gulch Picnic Area made a chilling discovery: a deceased individual ablaze. This incident would quickly become a mere part of a larger narrative, further complicated by a crash on Interstate 25 that caused prolonged traffic delays.
In the days following the gruesome find, efforts to detain one of the suspects, identified as Valdez-Salvador, escalated into a dangerous pursuit. The Denver Post detailed that deputies attempted to make contact on April 14, only to see him speed away, recklessly surpassing 100 mph and narrowly avoiding catastrophe by maneuvering past vehicles on the highway's shoulder. Valencia-Salvador's flight from justice came abruptly to an end when he was struck by a car on I-25.
Detailed investigation efforts led to the suspects' arrest, illuminating the connection to the victim, Lucio, who is believed to have been killed days before his body was found set on fire. "This was a disturbing case that started with a lot of unknowns," Capt. Bobby Moll of the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office conveyed in a statement. According to 9News, meticulous efforts to gather evidence and identify the victim's connections were crucial in the quick apprehension of both suspects.
The second suspect, 37-year-old Juana Espino of Evans, is currently facing similar charges to those against her alleged accomplice. The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office credits the successful pursuit and arrests to strong regional partners and the investigators’ relentless commitment to ensure public safety. Moll emphasized that securing these charges would not have been possible without the dedication demonstrated by multiple jurisdictions working in conjunction.
