A grave error at a Georgia jail has left a Central Florida family on edge after Kathan Guzman, convicted of murdering 19-year-old Delila Grayson in 2022, was mistakenly released from custody. Despite being sentenced to life in prison, Christina Grayson, mother of the victim, was notified on April 8 by authorities that Guzman was no longer in custody due to a clerical oversight. According to WESH, Clayton County officials acknowledged a "coding error" as the reason for the unintended release.
Christina Grayson shared with WFTV that she's now forced to sleep in shifts and keep a firearm close by due to fears that Guzman might seek retaliation against her family. The family has also questioned why Guzman was not yet transferred to a state prison, as he was still lodged at a county jail five months into his sentence. Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen attributed the accidental release to training issues and a lack of attentiveness.
The U.S. Marshals Service has joined the search for Guzman, while local Florida law enforcement is on high alert. Christina Grayson revealed in a statement detailed by ClickOrlando that the threat of Guzman's possible return has restricted her from even visiting her own daughter's gravesite. "I would like to go visit her gravesite, but I'm afraid. I'm afraid he might be there," she said.
The Clayton County District Attorney's Office also released a statement through Tasha A. Mosley detailing the turn of events and confirming communication with the victim's mother. "It is my sincere hope that Guzman is quickly re-apprehended and serves every day of his life sentence," Mosley expressed. Additionally, Christina Grayson stated, per ClickOrlando, that there was a lack of satisfactory answers and information regarding the situation. "I'm still in fear," she stated. The error has consequently turned the Grayson family's life into a surveillance routine as they wait for Guzman's recapture.
